Durmitor National Park — Private Mountain Excursion by Luxury SUV from Kotor — FFGR Montenegro Montenegro

Montenegro's interior is as extraordinary as its coastline. A private excursion to Durmitor National Park — UNESCO-listed, home to the Tara Canyon — in a luxury SUV from Kotor is a day that reframes the country entirely.

Montenegro's coastal circuit — Kotor, Porto Montenegro, Budva, Sveti Stefan — is justifiably celebrated. What is less often reached, and more profoundly memorable, is the country's interior. Durmitor National Park, in the northwestern highlands, covers 390 square kilometres of glacial lakes, black pine forest, and limestone massif. Its centrepiece is the Tara River Canyon — at 1,300 metres, the second deepest gorge in the world after the Grand Canyon — and the Đurđevića Tara Bridge, an extraordinary 172-metre arch completed in 1940, briefly the longest concrete bridge in Europe.

The drive from Kotor to Durmitor is approximately 180 kilometres each way. In a Rolls-Royce Cullinan or a Mercedes-Benz GLS with a private chauffeur, it is a journey through five distinct landscapes: coastal Mediterranean, the serpentine descent from the Vrmac ridge, the plains above Podgorica, the forested climb to the highlands, and finally the open plateau of the Durmitor massif itself. A full day is required; an early start — 07:30 from Kotor — is strongly recommended.

Departing Kotor at dawn, your chauffeur takes the inland road via Cetinje — Montenegro's former royal capital, worth a brief stop at the Njegoš Mausoleum on Mount Lovćen if schedule permits — before descending to Podgorica and turning northwest. The road north through Kolašin and Mojkovac enters pine forest at approximately 1,000 metres altitude; the air changes; the temperature drops by five degrees.

Žabljak, the gateway town to Durmitor, is reached in under three hours from Kotor. A modest settlement at 1,450 metres, it serves excellent coffee and a regional breakfast of dried lamb, kajmak cream, and mountain honey. The FFGR Montenegro team can arrange a reserved table at Stara Kafana, the town's most characterful establishment, for arrival.

The Black Lake — Crno Jezero — is a twenty-minute walk from Žabljak's centre through a forest of ancient pines. In early morning, before the day-trippers arrive, it is among the most quietly beautiful places in the Western Balkans. The Tara Canyon viewpoint at Curevac is a forty-minute drive from Žabljak through the national park; the perspective from the rim, 1,100 metres above the river, is vertiginous and clarifying in equal measure.

The Đurđevića Tara Bridge is reachable by a short detour on the return journey north of Mojkovac — the structure is best seen from the road below, where its full span becomes apparent against the gorge. Allow thirty minutes for the stop.

The Rolls-Royce Cullinan is recommended for this itinerary on account of its ground clearance and all-surface capability; sections of the Durmitor park road are unpaved. The Mercedes-Benz GLS is an equivalent alternative. The excursion departs from Kotor, Porto Montenegro, or any coastal hotel; hotel-to-hotel routing can be arranged if the guest is transiting north to Podgorica.
