Cetinje

The royal capital — Petrović dynasty and mountain seat of power.

Trajet

50 min from Kotor · old royal capital

Cetinje is the old royal capital of Montenegro — the city from which the Petrović Njegoš dynasty ruled the Black Mountain for two centuries, and where the Montenegrin spirit of fierce independence was forged. Set on a plateau between the Bay of Kotor and the central highlands at 670 metres, Cetinje is accessible by one of the most dramatic mountain roads in Europe — the Lovćen serpentines, 25 hairpin bends climbing from the coast to the plateau. The Cetinje Monastery holds the relics of Saint Peter of Cetinje and the Hand of Saint John the Baptist. The History Museum, the State Museum, and the former embassies of the great European powers — all built within walking distance on the main boulevard — recall the time when Cetinje was a capital of European consequence. The Mausoleum of Petar II Petrović Njegoš on Mount Lovćen is the most visited monument in Montenegro.
