Tirana has undergone an extraordinary transformation since 2000 — from a grey communist capital to one of the most colourful and energetic cities in the Balkans, with a new skyline of luxury hotels, a growing art scene, and a restaurant scene (Era, Mrizi i Zanave, Uka Farm) that has begun to attract international food press. Skanderbeg Square, the largest pedestrianised square in the Balkans, is surrounded by the National History Museum (mosaic facade), the Et'hem Bey Mosque, and the Grand Palace. The Blloku district — once reserved exclusively for communist party leaders — is now Tirana's most fashionable quarter.
