Ohrid
The Jerusalem of the Balkans — UNESCO lake and Byzantine churches.
— Trajet —
4 h from Kotor
Ohrid is one of the oldest human settlements in Europe and one of the most sacred cities in the Orthodox world — the "Jerusalem of the Balkans" — where 365 churches once stood, one for each day of the year. Lake Ohrid, shared with Albania, is one of Europe's oldest lakes, over 3 million years old, and its water is so clear that you can see the bottom at 22 metres depth. The Church of Saints Clement and Panteleimon, the Plaosnik monastery complex, and the Fortress of Tsar Samuel sit on the hill above the old town. The Ohrid boat tours across the lake to the monastery of Saint Naum — a peacock-inhabited sanctuary at the Albanian border — are among the most memorable half-days in the entire Balkans. FFGR Montenegro offers Ohrid as a full-day excursion from Kotor.
