Perast is the smallest baroque town in the world, a single street of Venetian palaces facing directly onto the Bay of Kotor, twelve minutes from Kotor by road. Sixteen baroque palaces line the waterfront; the two islands visible from every café table, Our Lady of the Rocks (built by sailors who placed a stone on every return voyage) and Saint George (a Benedictine monastery cemetery), are reached by private boat and rank among the most atmospheric short crossings in Europe. In July and August, Perast is discreetly exclusive: no cars reach the main promenade, boats moor directly at the palace steps, and the sunset views across the flat water towards Kotor are exceptional.
