Split is the capital of Dalmatia and the second-largest city in Croatia, a living Roman city built within the walls of Emperor Diocletian's retirement palace. The palace is not a museum: it is inhabited, with restaurants, apartments, bars, and workshops tucked into its Roman apartments and peristyle. The old town's Golden Gate, Silver Gate, Iron Gate and Bronze Gate are the four cardinal entrances to a 1,700-year-old complex that UNESCO considers one of the best-preserved Roman monuments in the world. Split Airport is a major gateway to the Croatian islands: Hvar, Brač, Vis, and Korčula are twenty minutes by ferry or fifteen by speedboat.
